A MacBook battery wears out with use. Most of the time the only symptom is shorter time away from the charger. Sometimes it is a physical problem that needs attention quickly. Here is how to tell which one you have.
Signs your MacBook battery is failing
- The battery drains much faster than it used to, or the percentage jumps around
- The MacBook shuts off suddenly with charge still showing
- The macOS battery status says Service Recommended
- The trackpad feels stiff, will not click properly, or the case is not sitting flat
- The trackpad or the keyboard area looks raised or lifted
- The MacBook only runs while plugged in
Swelling: stop using it
A swollen battery is a safety problem, not just a performance one. If the trackpad is lifting, the case is bulging, or the MacBook no longer sits flat on a table, stop charging it and stop using it, and bring it in. Do not press on the trackpad or try to flatten it.
How to check your cycle count
- Hold the Option key and click the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information.
- Open Power under Hardware.
You will see the Cycle Count and the battery Condition. Apple lists the rated cycle count for each MacBook model on its support site. Recent models are rated for 1,000 cycles. Once you are near that number, or the condition reads Service Recommended, a replacement is worth planning. You can also see battery health under System Settings, then Battery.
A high cycle count is not itself a fault. What matters is whether the battery still does the job you need.
