There are few things more stressful than pressing the power button and getting nothing. No Apple logo, no startup sound, no screen.
That does not always mean the MacBook is dead. The cause can be as simple as a worn cable or a startup glitch, or as serious as a failed battery, charging circuit or logic board. These checks take about ten minutes and cost nothing.
First, work out what "won't turn on" means
- No signs of life at all: no fan, no lights, no sound
- Fan, keyboard backlight or startup chime, but a black screen
- The Apple logo appears, then it restarts or freezes
- It only works while plugged in
If you can hear the fan or see the keyboard backlight but the screen is black, the MacBook is probably running and the display is the problem. A new battery will not fix that.
1. Check the charger and cable
This is the most common cause and the easiest to miss.
- Plug the charger into a different wall outlet, not a power bar that may have failed.
- Try a different USB-C cable, and a different adapter if you have one. A cable can look perfect and still be broken inside.
- Check that the adapter's cable is not frayed or kinked near the ends.
- Look into the charging port with a flashlight for lint or debris. Do not use metal tools to clean it.
Leave the MacBook plugged in for 15 to 30 minutes before you try again. A fully drained battery sometimes needs time before it responds.
2. Look at the charging light
MagSafe models have a light on the connector. Amber means charging and green means charged. No light at all points to the adapter, the cable, the outlet or the port. A flickering light often points to a damaged cable.
MacBooks with USB-C charging have no light on the cable. Instead, watch for a charging symbol or a battery icon when you open the lid.
3. Hold the power button
Disconnect every accessory first: monitors, hubs, drives, dongles and cards. Then hold the power button for a full 10 seconds, release it, wait a few seconds and press it once normally.
4. Reset or restart the right way for your model
The steps are different for Intel and Apple Silicon MacBooks. To find yours, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac, if it will turn on. If it will not, MacBooks from late 2020 onward are generally Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3 and later). Older ones are Intel.
Intel MacBook with a T2 chip (about 2018 to 2020)
- Shut the MacBook down.
- Hold the right Shift key, the left Option key and the left Control key for 7 seconds.
- Keep holding them and also hold the power button for another 7 seconds.
- Release everything, wait a few seconds, then press the power button.
Older Intel MacBook without a T2 chip
- Shut the MacBook down and plug in the charger.
- Hold the left Shift, Control and Option keys and the power button all at once for 10 seconds.
- Release, then press the power button.
Apple Silicon MacBook
There is no SMC reset on these models. Instead, hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the startup options screen appears or the MacBook restarts. Let go, wait a few seconds and press the button again.
If the MacBook starts after any of these steps, back up your files soon. A MacBook that needed a reset once may need one again.
5. Stop if any of these apply
Stop troubleshooting and bring it in if:
- It was dropped, or liquid was spilled on it. Shut it down, unplug it and do not keep trying to turn it on. Rice does not help.
- There is a burning smell, or the charging area gets hot.
- The trackpad or case looks raised or bulging, which can mean a swollen battery.
- The Apple logo appears but it never reaches the login screen. Do not erase the MacBook or reinstall macOS until your files are safe.
- You have tried a different charger and cable, done the steps above, and it is still completely unresponsive.
Does a MacBook that won't turn on need replacing?
Not necessarily. A battery, a charging component or a display fault can often be repaired without replacing the whole computer. For an older machine, replacement can make more sense. It depends on what has actually failed, which is why the fault should be diagnosed first.
What does MacBook repair cost in Calgary?
There is no single price. A battery replacement, a screen and a logic board repair are very different jobs, and the model matters. Diagnosis is free for most devices, except in cases of severe damage, and you will know the cost before any work starts. A MacBook battery replacement costs $159 to $249 depending on the model. Premium and OEM part options are available, and repairs carry a 3 month warranty from the date of repair (physical and liquid damage are not covered). See https://techfixcraft.ca/warranty/.
Frequently asked questions
Can a MacBook be repaired if it has no power at all?
Often, yes. No power can come from the charger, battery, charging circuit or logic board, and a technician needs to check which.
Should I keep trying to turn on a MacBook after liquid damage?
No. Shut it down and unplug it. Powering it on repeatedly can make liquid damage worse.
Is a black MacBook screen always a broken screen?
No. If you can hear the fan or see the keyboard light, the MacBook may be running with a display or connection fault.
Is it worth repairing an older MacBook?
It depends on the model, the fault and the repair cost. Once the fault is known, you can decide.
