"Should I get an OEM screen or an aftermarket screen?" is one of the most common questions before an iPhone screen repair. The honest answer is that the label tells you less than you would think. What does OEM mean?
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer: a part made to the original maker's specifications. For iPhones, new original displays are generally not sold through Apple's channels for independent resale. So many screens sold as "OEM" in the repair market are original Apple displays taken from another device and tested, or refurbished originals.
The term is used loosely in the repair industry. Ask any shop exactly what they mean by it.
What is an aftermarket screen?
An aftermarket screen is made by a third-party company rather than Apple. Quality ranges from very good to poor, so judging a screen only by the word "aftermarket" can mislead you. The real split is premium versus low quality.
Where the choice actually shows up
- Price: aftermarket parts usually cost less than original or refurbished original displays.
- Closeness to the original: an original display is the safest match for brightness, colour and viewing angles. A good aftermarket display can come close. A poor one looks dimmer or less accurate.
- Warranty: a part is only as good as the warranty behind it. Ask what is covered and for how long.
Does an aftermarket screen affect Face ID?
Usually no. Face ID stops working when the sensors beside the screen, or their flex cables, are damaged, either in the original drop or during a careless repair. Handling matters more than the label on the screen.
Questions to ask before you agree to a screen replacement
- What type of screen are you installing, and where does it come from?
- Is it premium quality?
- Will True Tone be transferred to the new screen where possible?
- Will I see the "genuine Apple display" message afterwards?
- What warranty comes with the repair?
