Most PS5 problems fall into a few groups: it will not start, it runs hot and loud, the disc drive misbehaves, or there is no picture. Most are repairable without buying a new console. Here is what each one usually means.
PS5 flashes blue and shuts off
If the PS5 powers on, flashes blue and then turns itself off, the console is failing to start up. That does not mean the console is finished. A startup failure can come from several places, including storage, software or power delivery, and it takes a proper diagnosis to find out which. Be cautious about any quote for a full board replacement before the fault has been identified.
Overheating and a loud fan
If the fan roars even on the home screen, the console is having trouble shedding heat. The usual culprits are dust in the vents and thermal compound that has degraded with age. Cleaning and re-applying compound is a common fix. If your PS5 sits on carpet or in a closed cabinet, that contributes too.
Disc drive problems
If the disc edition will not read games, ejects discs by itself, or grinds and clicks before spitting a disc out, the drive is usually worn mechanically or has an optical fault. Do not force a stuck disc out with a paperclip or pry the drive open. That can turn a simple repair into a drive replacement.
No picture or a flickering HDMI signal
If you get no signal, flickering, or a picture that only works when the cable is held at an angle, the HDMI port may be damaged. This often comes from pulling the cable at an angle or from a cable that puts stress on the port. HDMI port repair is something we do, and it usually costs far less than replacing the whole console.
Controller drift
Stick drift is a controller problem, not a console one. We repair drifting PS5 and Xbox controllers the same day, usually in about 30 minutes. Before you book a console repair, check whether only the controller is misbehaving.
Checks to try first
- Unplug the power cable for 60 seconds, not just a restart, then try again.
- Test the wall outlet and power cable with something else.
- With the console off, gently vacuum the rear vents.
- Try a different HDMI cable and a different HDMI port on the TV.
If none of that helps, have it looked at properly rather than opening it yourself. The screws and connectors are easy to damage, and a failed DIY attempt usually makes the repair more expensive.
