Snow looks harmless because it is frozen, but it melts as soon as it touches a warm phone. The water can get into the charging port, speakers and microphones. Here is what to do.
Step 1: Get it out and wipe it off
The longer the phone sits in snow, the more melting water can reach the openings. Brush off visible snow, wipe the outside with a dry cloth and do not shake it hard.
Step 2: Turn it off
Power the phone off. Moisture and electricity together can cause short circuits, damage to the charging system and battery problems. If it is already off, do not turn it back on.
Step 3: Take off the case and cables
Remove the case and unplug anything attached. A case can trap water against the phone and slow drying.
Step 4: Do not charge it
Plugging in a wet phone is the most common mistake. Charging with moisture in the port can damage the port or the board. Wait until the phone has had plenty of time to dry. If your iPhone warns that liquid was detected in the charging port, do not charge it until the warning clears.
Step 5: Let it dry slowly
Put the phone somewhere warm and dry indoors. Do not use a hair dryer, oven, microwave or space heater. Heat can damage the battery and internal parts. Rice is not a reliable fix either.
The hidden problem: coming indoors from the cold
Even if the phone never touched snow, walking from a Calgary winter into a warm building can cause trouble. Warm indoor air carries moisture. When it meets a phone that is still at freezing temperature, water condenses on the cold surfaces, including inside the phone, in the same way a cold glass sweats on a warm day.
This is why a phone that was fine outside can act strangely a few minutes after you come in. To reduce the risk:
- After being outside in the cold, leave the phone in your pocket or bag for 15 to 30 minutes so it warms up gradually.
- Do not charge it until it has reached room temperature.
- If you dropped it in snow, the condensation adds to the water already there, so give it more time before you power it on.
Watch for warning signs
Moisture damage can show up hours or days later. Watch for:
- Charging problems
- Distorted speaker or microphone sound
- Foggy camera lens
- Touchscreen issues
- Rapid battery drain or random shutdowns
Can a snow-damaged phone be repaired?
